What is Esophageal Cancer?

Esophageal cancer occurs when the tissue that lines the esophagus (The esophagus is the tube that connects the throat to the stomach, allowing food to pass) becomes malignant.

There are several different types of esophageal cancer:

Adenocarcinoma

Cancer starts in cells that make mucus, called glandular cells. This is the most common type of esophageal cancer.

Squamous cell carcinoma

Cancer starts in the flat, thin cells called squamous cells.

Symptoms of esophageal cancer include:

*Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)

* Weight loss without trying

* Chest pain, pressure or burning

* Worsening indigestion or heartburn

* Coughing or hoarseness

*Gastroesophageal reflux disease

*Tobacco and Alcohol
